I wasn’t planning to do this post...until I ate tonight’s dinner.
The last two days I have been quite sick with a tummy bug - probably due to the new and frequent germs around me and also my body climatising to the 40 degree temperatures. So, to be quite graphic, I’ve spent the last two days vomiting, diarrhoea, huge headaches and insanely horrible stomach cramps. I’ve still managed to go to most of my classes, and replenish myself on vitamin powder and tablets.
Here’s where the real story begins:
I skipped lunch today as I couldn‘t keep any food down and wasn’t really feeling like eating after throwing up my breakfast. A group of us didn’t feel like eating at the same restaurant we’ve been eating at since we arrived or eating at the market; we decided to get a takeaway on the way home. I ordered what looked like a nice chicken dish, priced at around $6. We waited an hour for our food but I didn’t mind as I was very excited to eat a dish without rice or pork for once! Once the food came, my bill was $13! We joked and said “wouldn’t it be funny if you got a whole chicken”. To which I replied “I bloody better get a whole chicken at that price”!
To no ones surprise, inside, was a tonne of chicken on bones:
If you can spot what I didn’t... well.. I have no prize so just give yourself a pat on the back.
Now, the chicken was actually lovely and I started eating a few wings and breasts.
This should've been my first warning sign... the spine and ribs (Not the good kind of ribs).
For as long as I can remember, this thing always happens to me, where I say “wouldn’t it be funny if” and that thing actually happens.
This time I went “wouldn’t it be funny if there was the whole chicken , including the head”. Seconds later, we pulled out the head.
This is the nicer side of the head, as when you looked through the back of it, all this bone and gloop came out of it. If this wasn’t enough to put me off my dinner, the next thing was.
The Feet. This is actually normal in Cambodia, however, I didn’t touch my chicken after this. I might’ve done if I hadn’t had a stomach bug the last few days... that’s a lie. There‘s no amount of money I would take to eat that... ok, maybe a certain amount of money. Still, it went straight into the bin- after I played around with it for a bit!
Charlotte gave the chicken a formal goodbye in the style of a handshake. And on that note, I’m heading off to enjoy the rest of my evening and put the chicken out of my thoughts.
Lea Hi!

It’s put me off chicken for quite a while, I’ve gone veggie here now for a cleaner and healthy diet and it’s done me a world of good... although I can’t wait to come back home and have a bacon sandwich! The bug has cleared up but I’m still stomach sick every day, feeling a little better In myself xx
Well that’s has well and truly put me of meat yuck sorry your not well hope the bug soon clears up and your feeling better xx
